Program Description: The Kennedy Krieger School provides comprehensive services to preschool through eighth grade students and is designed to provide effective preparation for students who, in the future, will be seeking either a diploma or a certificate at the high school level, which may be fulfilled at the Kennedy Krieger High School. The program is designed to meet the needs of a varied population of students. A best-practice, evidence-based, approach is used to implement curriculum, which focuses upon essential skills, and aligns with the Maryland Curriculum in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Art and P.E. Reading instruction may include: phonemic awareness, phonics, literature and sight-word methods, depending upon the learning needs of each child. Students utilize the “Tech Center” along with the technology resources within each classroom to enhance student interaction, develop problem solving skills and to reinforce learning. Students are motivated to utilize “Main Street,” the school’s state of the art, Media and Performance Center. It is here where students experience highly interactive learning, which comes alive by integrating music, art, drama and literacy. There are currently twenty-one (21) classrooms in the school. Some of these classrooms are intensive, highly specialized, carefully engineered, learning environments specifically designed to meet the unique learning needs of students on the autism spectrum. Interventions may include discrete trial, Applied Behavioral Analysis, TEACCH Model and a higher staff to student ratio. Other classrooms are designed for older students who benefit from a departmentalized approach to instruction and are able to travel between classes for instruction in various subject areas. The remaining classrooms are self-contained rooms that serve a wide variety of students with disabilities. We believe each student has a unique learning and behavioral profile. Each of the self-contained classrooms has an educational focus and a behavioral approach that is specifically tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. This flexibility in design and approach maximizes our ability to effectively program for a diverse population of students. We avoid a “one size fits all” approach by working with students in a more dynamic and specialized manner. As students progress each year, they can be transitioned into the classroom that best meets their evolving instructional and behavioral needs. All classrooms are staffed by a teacher and an assistant teacher. Classroom staff works in a trans-disciplinary, highly collaborative fashion with Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Mental Health Therapists, Resource Room staff, Art, Music, Physical Educational and Technology staff. This integrated team approach intensifies the program for students and maximizes the benefits that can be achieved. The Kennedy Krieger School staff is highly trained in providing positive behavioral supports and interventions as well as responding to behavioral crisis as needed. Emphasis is placed upon shaping and reinforcing socially appropriate behaviors and decreasing disruptive behaviors that interfere with learning.
